Hollow Needle vs Gun

Hollow Needle Piercing

Most common type of piercing needle that looks like a syringe needle - hollow needle featuring a triangular, sharp tip. It is safe to use & it's hollow structure make it perfect for piercing.

They come in different gauges, 20G (0.8mm) to 14G (1.6mm) are ideal for ear & nose piercings. As well as in a straight or curved needle - making piercings of the outer vs inner ear easier. A trained Piercer knows that it is necessary to wear the same size jewelry as the needle that is being used to pierce an individual.

Hollow Needles are made from Stainless Steel and are laser cut to ensure sharpness. They are one-time use per piercing. Hollow needles support the jewelry of your choosing - TBJ carries Titanium & Solid Gold Options.

Gun Piercing

Uses a spring-loaded mechanism to force an earring through the skin - creating blunt force trauma. Due to this, gun piercings have a higher risk for swelling, infection & jewelry rejection.

Gun piercings are common for earlobes but performing it can cause damage to delicate tissues. While piercing cartilage with a gun is difficult due to the strength of cartilage & the sheer force needed to puncture the tissues. Piercing guns come pre-loaded with jewelry - this jewelry is usually gold-plated or stainless steel, which is not hypoallergenic & therefore many people have reactions to & reject the piercing.

It is estimated that gun piercings take a year longer to heal on average compared to hollow needle piercings.

Piercing Process

Truly Blessed Jewels takes walk-ins & appointments for piercing, with appointments being strongly recommended - a wait may occur if you walk-in. Please book one appointment per person for your group. The price of the earrings are based on the size, type & metal of the earring, and come in a single (1) or a pair (2) which is specified on pricing sheets. The whole experience can take anywhere from 20-45 minutes not including wait times, so please plan accordingly.

  1. Once you arrive in the store, a FOH associate will check you in & ensure your consent form has been sent via email & signed. This process takes around 5 minutes a person.
  2. Once consent is signed, you'll identify what area(s) of the ear (lobe, upper lobe, helix, flat, rook, forward helix, daith, conch, tragus) or nose you want pierced.
  3. Once selected, you'll choose from the available options for earrings based off recommendations from the piercer - including style (hoop or stud), post size & ball size.
  4. Once an earring is chosen, the Piercer will map your ear/nose based off your anatomy and other piercings to identify the best placement for the piercing for YOU. The mapping process takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes per piercing you select.
  5. Once mapped, the Piercer will ensure set-up is cleaned & sterilized, pull your desired jewelry & needles & prepare to pierce.
  6. Once set-up is complete, the Piercer will pierce desired area(s). The Piercer will also ensure any bleeding has ceased before the customer is allowed up from up from chair. The piercing process takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes per piercing.

After Care

Healing Times:

  • Lobes: 6-8 Weeks
  • Cartilage: 3-6 Months
  • Nose: 3-6 Months

**This is the minimum amount of time needed to heal before it is safe to change your jewelry. Some individuals will heal faster while others may take longer. Please be aware these are initial healing times - most piercings will take years before they can be without jewelry for any extended length of time without shrinking or closing.

**Multiple piercings healing simultaneously may result in longer healing times

Basic Cleaning:

  1. Always wash your hands prior to cleaning your piercing
  2. Spray TBJ Aftercare Solution on piercing to liberally flush the piercing
  3. You may need to use a Q-Tip to clean away debris or "crusties" that may have collected on the jewelry around the piercing
  4. It is not necessary to rinse the cleaning solution off
  5. Clean your piercing twice daily

What to Avoid with a Healing Piercing:

  • Avoid touching your piercing - except when cleaning, after washing your hands.
  • Avoid removing your jewelry - new piercings shrink the moment jewelry is removed, making it painful or impossible to get back in.
  • Avoid overcleaning your piercing - it can slow the healing process & cause more harm than good
  • Avoid using any aftercare products or ointments not recommender by your Piercer
  • Avoid lotions & make-up in or around your piercing
  • Avoid sleeping with wet hair - the moisture can lead to complications
  • Avoid pools, hot tubs, lakes, rivers, etc.

Additional Suggestions:

  • Taking a multivitamin containing zinc & vitamin C can boost your body's healing abilities
  • Reminder: Increased stress, poor diet, drug abuse or illness can cause extended healing times
  • Make sure your bedding is clean - especially if you have pets at home
  • Shield piercings from hair spray & styling products
  • Clean your cell phone frequently & avoid contact with unclean phones
  • If you feel your piercing is infected, contact TBJ or your physician right away! Though we are not doctors, we're happy to give suggestions based on our experience.
  • Reminder: It is normal to have some redness, tenderness, swelling, discharge at piercing site, rash, unexpected drainage from the site or a fever within 24 hours from the piercing
